What is Progressive Overload?
Progressive overload is a concept that was developed by U.S. Army physician Thomas Delorme in the 1940’s. He used it to help World War II soldiers to recover from injuries. What it is, it is the need for greater demands on the body during successive workouts over time. It calls for variation in training (which means planned rests and variation in the exercise stress). It is not variation for variation sake like you may see in CrossFit. It is planned progressions. Once an athlete adapts to the demands of a training program it is essential to change or adjust the training to make it more difficult. That may mean increasing weight or may even mean increasing reps, increasing speed of concentric, shorten rest periods, or increase training volume. There are several other ways. If progressive overload is not applied then not all the muscle fibers will be recruited and thus lead to very minimal physiological changes. Periodization training both classic and non linear periodization accommodate progressive overload.
Keep pushing yourself by doing some of the above. Make it count!!
