Are you ready to boost your wrestling strength and conditioning? Do you know what it takes to increase your competitiveness and operate at your peak performance levels? Let me show you!
My name is Joey Barbera and I’ve recently completed what I believe is the best offseason strength and conditioning program for competitive wrestling. This is a periodized program designed to ensure you hit your performance goals and achieve maximum speed, power, strength and muscle endurance. Without getting too technical, I will give you a brief overview of what periodization is. For starters, most all successful collegiate/professional and Olympic athletes are on some kind of annual periodized plan. Olympic athletes are on a series of annual plans, as their major competition comes every four years. The annual periodized program is broken into phases. Those phases are:
PREPATORY (preseason) | COMPETITIVE (season) | TRANSITION (off-season)
Inside those phases are another set of phases designed to illicit particular physiological effects for you to perform your best. Those phases are:
ANATOMICAL ADAPTION | HYPERTROPHY | MAXIMUM STRENGTH | CONVERSION | COMPETITIVE | TRANSITION
All of these phases serve a particular purpose and the order of these phases are crucial.
Why and what is periodization? Strength and conditioning programs bring about significant improvements in strength, eventually physical adaptations and psychological adjustments will occur less frequently, and the athlete will experience performance plateaus or decrements. There may also be an increased risk injury and other symptoms associated with overtraining. To promote long term training and performance improvements, a strength and conditioning program should include preplanned, systematic variations in training specificity, intensity, and volume organized in periods of cycles within an overall program!
